The Mirror claims Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is making regular fitness checks on the state of Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez.
The £15 million rated striker could be the subject of intense interest from Spurs this winter, with the Mirror’s claim suggesting Pochettino is following his situation on the South Coast closely.
“Mirror Sport reported last week that Pochettino is making regular fitness checks on Rodriguez who has been out since last season with a knee injury,” reports the Mirror.
On the one hand, this is encouraging for the Saints because it suggests that Spurs may not make a big play for the forward if he doesn’t feature before the New Year.
That allows them to get him fit, get him involved and provides him with the chance to pay back the loyalty the club has shown in him over the second half of the season
On the other hand, if the claim is true then it’s evidence of Tottenham’s interest in him and the North Londoners could make things difficult for the Saints either this winter or next summer.
There is an argument to let him go because Ronald Koeman’s side have propelled themselves into a position where they are challenging for the league and Rodriguez hasn’t been a part of that.
However, the most likely scenario is that the forward will stay put until at least this summer and a lot can happen between now and then in relation to Tottenham and Southampton’s fortunes, as well as Rodriguez’.
