The Mirror claims Aston Villa have planned further talks with captain Ron Vlaar over his future.
Several reports this morning are suggesting that Manchester United are engineering themselves into a position where they can try and do a deal this January, but the Mirror claim the possibility of Vlaar signing a new deal with Aston Villa is very much alive.
“Louis van Gaal wants Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar to solve his defensive injury crisis,” reports the Mirror.
“Villa fear losing Vlaar, 29, in January as he is out of contract next summer when he can leave on a free transfer.”
“They have been trying to tie him down to a new deal and further talks are planned before the window opens.”
Aston Villa have struggled this season when Vlaar hasn't been available, which shows the Dutchman’s importance to Paul Lambert’s team in terms of their defensive integrity.
However, it’s difficult to see what they could offer him that Manchester United can’t over the second half of the season.
United are in a position where they can give him a bigger contract, due to the club’s immense financial network all over the world.
In terms of playing time, Vlaar would slot straight into the United back four and stay there, potentially acting as captain when Wayne Rooney isn’t available.
United are also a good shout for European football by the end of the season whether that’s the Europa League or the Champions League.
United have suffered their worst ever start to a Premier League campaign but they are still being backed to get into at least the top six.
Villa are well within their rights to try and get Vlaar tied down on a long term deal, but whether he signs it or takes a fresh challenge at a bigger club is something they have no control over.
