When Arsenal signed Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona for a reported £35million, there were not many in the footballing community who saw it as anything other than a great piece of business for the Gunners. But few expected the Chile international to hit the ground running in such fine style.
Alexis has already scored 11 goals for Arsenal, including seven goals in just nine Premier League experiences, and his energy, work ethic and innate talent are such that he could become one of Arsene Wenger’s greatest ever signings.
But the 25-year-old’s influence comes into even sharper focus when you compare his goal tally with that of Manchester United’s front-four.
When Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria joined Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford this summer they were immediately hailed as one of the best forward lines in world football. And yet so far this season Alexis has scored more goals than the four United stars combined.
Van Persie, Di Maria and Rooney have all scored three goals apiece while Falcao has netted just one, meaning Louis van Gaal’s world-class foursome have scored one goal less between them than Arsenal’s summer arrival.
The season is long and until the dust settles we will not know which side has enjoyed the best campaign, but for now it is clear the Chilean is enjoying the far better individual start, and that can only bode well for the future at a reenergised Emirates Stadium.
