On this day: Fellaini and RVP nightmare; Mourinho criticises Chelsea players

Fellaini United

On the 5th November 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 5th November 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 5th November 2013…

RVP-Fellaini nightmare

A year ago today and it was a miserable day at the office for Manchester United, in particular Marouane Fellaini and Robin van Persie.

United drew their Champions League tie away to Real Sociedad 0-0 - the Spanish side coming away from the game with a point after Van Persie missed a penalty.

Meanwhile the Belgian was sent off, as fears continued over his suitability as a United player.

In a strange turn of fate, 12 months down the line and Moyes is being tipped as the next Sociedad manager - after being sacked by Manchester United in April.

Chelsea criticism

Jose Mourinho launched an attack on his own players a year ago today, very unlike the Portuguese boss.

It came after Chelsea had lost to Newcastle United at the weekend and were gearing up to take on Schalke 04 in the Champions League.

Mourinho said:

“You cannot think you win games just because you have the nice shirt. If you think like that, you’re in trouble.

"They were playing as if a goal would arrive. So you try and push people and wake them up. The problem was attitude. Things happened there I didn’t like.

“Footballers are human beings. Suddenly you get a match where you become complacent.”

A year on and Chelsea face what should be an easy win against NK Maribor and sit top of the Premier League.

'Brave' for Brendan

Brendan Rodgers was commenting on his Liverpool side - insisting he wanted players who were 'brave' in possession.

"I think my history as a coach shows I like players who are gifted technically and have courage when it comes to being in possession of a football.

"That is a key quality for me; can you be brave on the pitch, not in terms of 50-50 tackles but having the ball and looking to play in areas others wouldn't?"

If he did sign any brave players, they are certainly not playing like it at the moment, as Liverpool suffer a slump in form.
