Manchester United send scouts to Benfica - could they sign Chelsea and Liverpool target?

Manchester United sent scouts to watch Benfica on Tuesday night - but who were they watching?

Despite forking out around £150m on new signings in the summer, it would be little surprise to see Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal look to make more additions in the January transfer window, and certainly next summer.

His United team are making progress - slowly - but progress nonetheless. Summer additions Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind and Angel Di Maria have settled in well, but injuries have restricted Ander Herrera and Radamel Falcao.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, it's reasonable to anticipate bids from United, even if they don't match the £37m that the Red Devils forked out for Juan Mata in January of this year.

According to reports in Portugal, United sent scouts to Portugal on Tuesday night to watch Benfica host Monaco in the Champions League - and it's widely reported that van Gaal has an interest in Benfica midfielder Enzo Perez.

Yet having taken in Benfica's 1-0 win, United scouts surely couldn't have missed the exceptional display from Brazilian Anderson Talisca.

Now, signing a Brazilian called Anderson from a club in Portugal may seem terrifying to United fans after that 2007 deal, but Talisca is fast becoming one of the hottest properties in Europe.

The 20-year-old only arrived at the Estadio da Luz from Bahia in the summer, and he's already made his mark with nine goals in 14 games in all competitions.

After seeing Jan Oblak, Guilherme Siquiera, Ezequiel Garay, Andre Gomes, Lazar Markovic, Oscar Cardozo and Rodrigo leave the club, Benfica needed a new hero this summer - and, funnily enough, it's easy to get behind someone described as a hybrid of Yaya Toure and Neymar.

Talisca, a 6ft 2in attacking midfielder, has already earned plaudits and attracted interest from Jose Mourinho and his Chelsea side, as well as Liverpool, but United will have seen his ability first hand on Tuesday night.

Having already created a host of chances for his team mates, Talisca went on to score the winning goal, handing Benfica a valuable 1-0 win.

With Juan Mata out of favour and Robin van Persie out of form, there could be scope for United to add a player who can play as a No. 10 and as a striker - and having seen him play on Tuesday, United should be looking to beat Chelsea and Liverpool to Talisca's signature.
