Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been criticised for his team selection against Real Madrid last night but the fact remains, his team played well despite a 1-0 defeat at the Bernabeu.
The Reds got stuck in and made things difficult with one of the notable performances coming from left-back Alberto Moreno.
Moreno was one of the first team regulars who wasn’t rested for the game last night and he impressed, keeping Real Madrid’s attacking stars quiet, when they tried to attack down that side of the pitch.
He also got forward well throughout the game and passed sensibly and while Kolo Toure is attracting the headlines for his performance, Moreno had one of his most solid displays since he moved to the club from Sevilla last summer.
He looked at home in an intimidating atmosphere and it was clear that he’d played football against Real Madrid in Spain as he kept his cool through difficult periods during the match.
“I didn't see this as a big showcase game where I had to play the so-called names. It might have seemed a gamble but for me it wasn't - In terms of criticism of my team selection I am not really bothered,” said Rodgers after the game.
“The changes were the team that I thought would get us a performance and a result. Unfortunately we got the performance but not the result.”
Moreno is one player who has cemented his place in the side for this weekend and barring any injury, which he could pick up in training, he’ll be tasked with keeping one of Andre Schurrle or Willian quiet from the Chelsea attack.
On this evidence, he’s likely to retain his place in the side for most of the season.
Here’s what Liverpool fans on Twitter had to say about his performance last night.
Kolo Toure, Adam Lallana, Fabio Borini and Alberto Moreno all deserve a place in #LFC starting 11 vs Chelsea on Saturday— Dale smith (@DaleSmith_93) November 5, 2014
Kolo and Mignolet were immense. Emre Can showed signs of why #LFC were so excited to get him in. Moreno, Borini did well. Collective effort— Melissa Reddy (@1stLadyOfFooty) November 4, 2014
Moreno matching Bale stride for stride was quite a sight too. He's got a big future for us. #LFC— Hari Sethi (@Hari_Sethi) November 4, 2014
Lessons learnt, Migs can do it on the big stage, Kolo is ace, Can & Moreno have real potential, #LFC have depth & BR has got balls of steel!— Paul Austin (@PaulBigpaulie) November 4, 2014

I would go for Moreno as MOM but fact there are a few options tonight demonstrates the improvement in #lfc performance. Can also stood out— Ernie Fox (@ernietfox) November 4, 2014
I'll take that. It's still a defeat, but we gave a good account of ourselves. Several players impressed, Can and Moreno in particular. #LFC— Ray Wilson (@theraywilson) November 4, 2014
