A makeshift Liverpool side put in a spirited Champions League performance at Real Madrid on Tuesday night, only for Karim Benzema’s 27th-minute strike to earn the holders a 1-0 win.
Following the 3-0 defeat to Real at Anfield a fortnight ago, manager Brendan Rodgers opted to make seven changes to his line-up from the weekend’s loss to Newcastle United, with captain Steven Gerrard, Mario Balotelli, Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho, Glen Johnson and Jordan Henderson all left on the bench, and Dejan Lovren not even among the substitutes.
However, Rodgers denied his team selection was made with an eye on Saturday's home game against Chelsea, telling ITV pre-match: 'I think we've got a strong team out for the game.
'We're certainly not forfeiting the game in any way, we've got nine full internationals playing and two Under-21 internationals, so we've actually got a strong team.’
With the likes of Javier Manquillo, Lucas Leiva and Fabio Borini thus drafted in to face a team in the midst of an 11-game winning-streak, few were expecting the Reds to put up much of a fight, but the Northern Irishman’s side surprised the doubters by keeping the scoreline more than respectable.
While the club now sit three points off second-place Basel in Group B with two games left, it was nevertheless a memorable European night, with the following being some of the best images from the match.
