Tottenham Hotspur defender Federico Fazio says a clean sheet will be the key to beating Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League tomorrow night.
Fazio is likely to feature in the Tottenham back four as Mauricio Pochettino’s team look to back up the 5-1 hammering against the same side in the last round of European games.
Fazio has explained that the side has been working on ways they can ensure a clean sheet tomorrow, as well as touching on what he feels are his basic duties as a defender.
“It’s the most important thing as a defender to ensure our opponents’ players cannot score goals. We are working towards this against Asteras Tripolis on Thursday,” he told the Tottenham website.
“I think the match will be very different to the first game at home. We can take confidence from the first match, but we know this week’s game will be very difficult, very close and it’s important to take three points.”
Tottenham will be confident because reports suggest that in form striker Harry Kane is likely to start this game, despite pressure on Pochettino to hold him back for the Premier League match against Stoke this weekend.
Kane bagged a hat-trick in that 5-1 win, but Fazio says it’s important for the side not to look backwards, suggesting that Tottenham’s win didn’t do Asteras justice.
“Maybe the result of the last match was slightly harsh on Asteras because they played well and they have a good team, but we are always looking for the next win and we hope to take the points away again this week.”
Tottenham are level on five points with Besiktas at the top of their group and will be looking to stretch into a lead ahead of the last two group games before the knockout rounds kick into action.
