Recent reports have claimed Manchester United are closely monitoring Benfica midfielder Enzo Perez with the view to making a January move.
It is not the first time the 28-year-old has been linked with United, but the latest claims from the Daily Star suggest Louis van Gaal may be tempted by the player's £23.5million release-clause. It has also been claimed that United sent scouts to watch Perez in action when Benfica took on Monaco in the Champions League earlier this week, so how did the player get on?
Perez played his part in an impressive 1-0 victory for the Portuguese champions, with an 85 per cent passing accuracy and six dribbles showing he was very much involved in the action.
He failed to have a single shot on target but that was not his job; instead he won two aerial battles, one interception, one tackle and eight ground duels in a performance that suggested he could be a viable option for United if they wish.

Perez proved at the World Cup that he can perform at the highest level, while his versatility - he can play as a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder or a right winger - could be perfect for van Gaal's side.
The player's age is such that paying his release-clause could be something United opt not to do, especially when you consider some of the younger alternatives who may be available for not that much more. But Perez could be one of the few quality midfielders United are actually able to sign in the short-term and given their current predicament that could be vital.
