In the constant search for goals this season, rumours are starting to build that Sunderland striker Jozy Altidore could be set for a loan move to France in January, and it could be the perfect fit for player and club.
No club in France has scored fewer goals that Lille this season. Two other clubs have scored nine, but they are Guingamp and Bastia, with the latter having sacked coach Claude Makelele on Monday afternoon.
The defence has saved Lille from slipping further down the table, the six clean sheets that they have managed so far, has saved René Girard’s blushes. Lille is currently 12th after 12 games and has only managed four wins this season.
Les Dogues are in desperate need for goals. Divock Origi is set to stay at the club for the rest of the season, but he needs help and leadership to learn and play off.
Rumours around the Stadium of Light is that UN Men’s National team striker Altidore will be available in January, with a loan move the best and easiest way to get the forward important game time.
This season Altidore has only managed to play 81 minutes in six Premier League appearances, with his only goal this season coming in the league cup.
Sunderland signed the 24-year-old forward after he score 38 goals in two seasons for AZ in the Eredivisie, and perhaps it is more time abroad that the American forward needs to get back to his best.
Salomon Kalou left Lille this summer and took his 16 goals from last season with him. Despite lacking in team ethic and work rate, it is hard to replace those goals when you only sign a 19-year-old Swiss striker. Michael Frey joins Origi in being inexperienced members of the attack.
Although Altidore is still under-25, his experience of playing in the Premier League for Sunderland and seven other sides around Europe and the US would bring much needed experience to the Lille attack.
His powerful and energetic style would suit Lille well and would add to Origi’s attributes rather than be his replacement. Lille are purposely looking to England for a striker to bring on loan this winter, Altidore could be the perfect fit.
