Two goals from Steven Fletcher and a Jordi Gomez strike were enough to help Sunderland to a 3-1 win at Crystal Palace last night, helping to erase the memory of some bitter recent defeats.
The magnifying glass has been firmly on the club since the 8-0 defeat against Southampton but they battled hard last night and took full advantage when Mile Jedinak was shown a second yellow card late on.
Sunderland boss Gus Poyet was understandably delighted with the victory, praising his side after the game.
“The win means a lot, more than anyone can think. It was a difficult couple of weeks, where it looked like everything we had done earlier in the season was thrown away,” he told the BBC.
“This result is a confirmation that I knew we were better than the Southampton game. We feel like we are a proper team today.”
“I couldn't believe we scored another own goal. Wes Brown could not believe it himself. I don't know if you can train that out of players but we need to get back to basics.”
The result has seen Sunderland move onto 11 points, just two behind Manchester United, climbing up to 15th in the Premier League table.
The side now have a full week to rest, recover and reflect on the result before they take on Everton next weekend before the third international break of the season so far.
A couple more wins puts Sunderland into the top half of the table, which would completely change the perception of them as a side and also create a number of benefits for them internally.
The mood and mentality can change from a side that were rock bottom a couple of weeks ago, to a side now looking to get into the top half of the table and stay there.
