The Liverpool boss admits European competition will always come second to domestic football.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers admits the Premier League is a bigger priority for his side than the Champions League.

The Reds' second-place finish in the top flight last season earned them a place in Europe's premier competition this term.

But Rodgers admits the Premier League is ahead of the Champions League when it comes to the priority he places on games.

The subject arose when the 41-year-old discussed potentially dropping Steven Gerrard for tonight's Group B clash at Real Madrid.

"Three big games, Newcastle, Madrid and then Chelsea. I need to look at a number of players to look at the games we want them to play in," Rodgers told reporters.

“But there is no doubt that our priorities are the Premier League and the Champions League - and always in that order.

“I need to find the solutions. If this is a defining game for me, then great. Whatever the result, I will be refocused and hungrier to win the next game."
