Manchester United defender Paddy McNair has been called up for Northern Ireland’s upcoming Euro 2016 qualifying match against Romania.

The teenager has shot to prominence this season after United manager Louis van Gaal gave him his debut, with the 19-year-old impressing alongside summer signing Marcos Rojo.

An injury meant that McNair missed out on the chance of earning a call-up last month but now Michael O’Neill has included the teenager in his latest squad.

In quotes published by the Belfast Telegraph, O’Neill said, “Paddy basically came from obscurity to United’s first-team and he has coped brilliantly.

“We have known about Paddy for a long time. In many ways he has been fast-tracked but he has shown he has the qualities to perform at that level.”

With Rojo injured and Chris Smalling suspended, McNair is likely to see more action for United prior to Northern Ireland’s vital encounter.

In other news, the Daily Mail reports that United striker Robin van Persie has been showcasing his street skills for a television show.

The Dutch forward is struggling up front for his club but he showed off some neat touches in a series of pictures published by the newspaper.

Now all van Persie needs to do is start scoring regularly for his club as they look to climb back up the table in the weeks and months ahead.
