Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has insisted that the in-form Sergio Aguero is in the same class as former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi.
Toure played with Messi for three seasons at Barcelona, including the 2008-09 treble-winning campaign under Pep Guardiola, before making a £24 million move to the Etihad Stadium in July 2010.
The Ivorian was then joined at City the following summer by the Argentine forward’s international teammate, who arrived from Atletico Madrid, and he claims that the gap in quality between the pair is so slight that he couldn’t pick one over the other.
‘I've been able to play with Messi but now I am able to play with Aguero,’ he told the Mirror. ‘Aguero is a fantastic striker.
‘If I have to choose one of them it's quite difficult. Messi is one of the best in the world, definitely, but Aguero as well is strong, clever, he's fast.
‘Both strikers are fantastic and I really enjoyed playing with Messi and now to play with Aguero I really enjoy it.’
Aguero has made an excellent start to the season, scoring 12 times in 14 total appearances, including nine in his last eight games, and Toure firmly believes that the star striker’s goals can fire the club to both a Premier League repeat and Champions League success.
‘I think the preference would be both but we know it’s always difficult to win both,’ he said.
‘The Premier League is very, very tough and it takes a lot of your energy. The Champions League, after, you’re playing against very clever teams because it’s the competition of the champions of Europe.
‘For us the perfect scenario is going to be both. We know it’s going to be difficult but we will try it.’
