Liverpool morning news: Reason for Gerrard rest, Nicol lays into Manchester United

A round up of news stories this morning about Liverpool.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is likely to be rested for the Champions League game against Real Madrid this evening.

Gerrard is likely to be held back for the Premier League clash against Chelsea this coming weekend.

“In Steven’s case, I have to look at what the priority is for him and us. If he played against Newcastle and didn’t play tomorrow night you could say this Saturday was the priority,” said manager Brendan Rodgers.

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has poked fun at Manchester United after their defeat in the Manchester derby last weekend.

United lost the game 1-0 but dominated the match before Chris Smalling was sent off.

“We have Man United and Van Gaal feeding us a line that they’re getting better - Man United at the moment have an excuse for every game for every result. They try and put a positive spin on it but the fact is they have 13 points from 10 games,” said Nicol.

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool have it in them to beat Real Madrid this evening.

The Reds head into the game as massive underdogs but Carragher believes all of the pressure is now off of his former side.

“People don’t expect Liverpool to get anything so the pressure is off a bit but you don’t want to go there and get embarrassed - Of course Real Madrid are big favourites but it’s not impossible for Liverpool to get something out of the game,” said Carragher.
