Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been speaking about his goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez following the 22-year-old’s performance against Anderlecht last month.
The Gunners face the Belgian side again this evening in the second of the double-header and in the match-day programme, Wenger revealed what he thought of his back-up ‘keeper’s performance last time out.
In quotes later published by Arsenal’s official website, Wenger said, “Martinez impressed me in the away game at Anderlecht.
“I think he gained confidence and respect from everybody, because he has shown that he has the quality to play for us. Not only because of his technical ability, but his presence as well was great.”
Martinez is expected to step aside at the Emirates Stadium for what will be Arsenal’s fourth match of this season’s group stage.
Wojciech Szczesny should regain the gloves having sat out the last European match due to suspension. But Martinez showed in Belgium that he has the composure to be an Arsenal goalkeeper, and while one match does not make a great player, Wenger’s comments point to a bright future for the young Argentine.
