21-year-old Sam Johnstone is now on his second loan spell with Doncaster Rovers, and was in match-winning form on Saturday as Doncaster beat Bradford to record their fifth win of the season.
Rovers came from behind to beat the Bradford in the Yorkshire derby thanks to second-half goals from former Manchester City defender Reece Wabara and Curtis Main.
Bradford took the lead late into the first-half, with Jon Stead finding the top left-hand corner to net his first goal of the season in Bradford colours. However, Johnstone’s inspired form kept Bradford from extending their lead and Doncaster, in the end, fought back to claim all three points.
After the game, Paul Dickov and the Doncaster Rovers supporters were in awe of the Manchester United loanee’s performance and really praised his impact on their win.
‘’He made two fantastic saves first-half,’’ Dickov said. ‘’It’s not just the saves he makes, he gives the whole back four confidence.
‘’When you’re under pressure through free-kicks, corners, long balls into the box, he’s brave. He comes and he punches it, he comes and he catches it and that breeds a lot of confidence into the team.
‘’He’s mature way behind his years. He’s a fantastic kid, he’s at a fantasic club in Manchester United but he wants to play football and that was a big factor in getting him back here.
‘’I thought he was outstanding.’’
The former England Under-20 keeper is down the pecking order at Manchester United, with David de Gea cemented as first choice along with competition from Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos, so could look use his time at Doncaster Rovers as a potential shop window.
Last season, the young keeper won similar plaudits and was linked with Premier League bound Burnley and later play-off failures Derby County but nothing ever materialised.
Doncaster Rovers supporters will no doubt be keen on Dickov trying to land the United star permanently, if possible, judging by their reaction to his performance at weekend:
