Chris Smalling took responsibility for his dismissal against Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday, says Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that Chris Smalling apologised for his dismissal against Manchester City on Sunday.

The England international was sent off in the 38th minute of the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League.

Smalling received his first yellow card of the match for blocking a clearance by City goalkeeper Joe Hart and then lunged at James Milner to earn his second caution.

The defender’s dismissal was key in the Manchester derby, which ended in a 1-0 win for City (click here to read more).

Van Gaal slammed Smalling after the match, but he has also stated that the defender took responsibility for his dismissal.

‘You cannot do what he has done’, The Daily Mail quotes the Dutchman as saying. ‘He said (sorry) and is very humble. You can only accept it’.

United are currently 10th in the Premier League table with 13 points from 10 matches, four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal.
