Sergio Aguero was the star of the Manchester derby as Manchester City edged past Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, while Robin van Persie struggled to make a huge impact at the Etihad Stadium.
Sergio Aguero and Robin van Persie are two of the best strikers in the Premier League, and they came head-to-head in the Manchester derby on Sunday.
It was Aguero’s goal in the second half which eventually saw Manchester City get the better of 10-man Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League.
It was not just that one moment that made the Argentina international stand head and shoulders over Van Persie; overall, the former Atletico Madrid striker had a much better and more effective game.
As the stats above show, Aguero was better than the Netherlands international striker in almost all areas.
The 26-year-old looked much livelier than Van Persie and took no fewer than six shots, four of which were target. On the other hand, the Dutchman took three shots, of which only one was on target.
Aguero was much more involved in City’s game and took no fewer than 48 touches. The Argentine star’s pass accuracy in the Manchester derby was a decent 77%.
Van Persie had just 19 touches of the ball, but he had a pass accuracy of 80%. Another area in which the former Arsenal captain bettered Aguero was in chances created. The 31-year-old gave two key passes, while the City striker gave just one.
Sunday’s Manchester derby was not one of Van Persie’s best matches, but he did try his best despite the lack of service from midfield after the dismissal of Chris Smalling in the latter stages of the first half.
As for Aguero, the goal against United was his 10th in 10 Premier League appearances this season and proved once again that he is a truly world-class striker.
