Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have advised Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal not to leave Angel di Maria out on the wings all the time.
Argentina international Di Maria was confined largely in a wide role against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday.
It impeded the former Real Madrid star from playing to the best of his abilities in the Manchester derby, which ended in a 1-0 victory for the Citizens.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher and ex-United star Neville believes that Di Maria needs to be played a bit more inside.
‘I think he needs to bring Di Maria back inside’, Carragher told Sky Sports. ‘For the last couple of games he has played wide and he has not looked the same player. I think he is much better inside’.
‘That’s a big one, that’, Neville added. ‘He has been nullified. ‘He was sensational in those five or six matches when he played in that inside left of that three in midfield.
‘He has played on the right and left wings in the last few weeks and he has been nowhere near as effective. He has, in fact, looked lost at times’.
Di Maria has scored three goals and created 26 chances in eight Premier League appearances for United so far this season, while having a pass accuracy of 79% and a shot accuracy of 50%.
