Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has backed Christian Benteke to come back stronger from his dismissal against Tottenham Hotspur.
The 23-year-old striker was sent off in the 65th minute of the Premier League clash at Villa Park on Sunday.
Belgium international Benteke was dismissed for pushing Tottenham midfielder Ryan Mason in the face.
Lambert believes that the striker was wrongfully sent off and is quoted as saying by London24.com: ‘He will because he is only 23 and only been here a few years.
‘He missed a lot of last year and he’ll learn as he gets older. I don’t think they could handle him and he is getting better, there’s no two ways about it. Slowly but surely. It’s a blow’.
Villa boss Lambert also believes that Mason should have been sent off, but he is reluctant to make a case to referee Neil Swarbrick.
‘Last time I did that I was a bit lighter in the pocket’, said the 45-year-old.
The 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday was Villa’s sixth in a row in the Premier League and pushed them further towards relegation.
The Villans are currently 15th in the league table with 10 points from as many games, just two points above the relegation zone.
