But it could have been oh so different for the Wolves had they just shown a bit more incision in the final third.
Kenny Jackett's side were also denied a penalty that could easily have been given, meaning a clean sheet for Gary Rowett during his first game in charge of the Blues.
"We huffed and puffed and we had a lot of the ball but we didn't do enough going forward in the final third," Wolves boss Jackett told BBC West Midlands.
"It didn't surprise me the way they set up, playing 5-4-1. But it was down to us to break them down. As for the penalty shout, sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't. It could have gone either way."
But there were certainly positives. For one, the fact that newly promoted Wolves are disappointed to be fourth speaks volumes for the quality of their form this campaign.
Midfielder Lee Evans, meanwhile, was voted man of the match against Birmingham City.
Great support today shame we couldn't get the 3 points to match! Onto Tuesday now— Lee Evans (@LeeEvans94) November 1, 2014
And the 20-year-old's performance did not go unnoticed by supporters on Twitter after the game. Fans, though, as well as Evans himself, will be hoping for more than a draw when Wolves travel to face old manager Mick McCarthy at Ipswich Town on Tuesday night.
Here are the best supporter reactions to Evans' performance on Twitter!
Frustrated to be 4th! Shows our ambition & progression. Hugely impressed by Lee Evans. Rowe is strong but Golbourne attacks with gusto #wwfc— John Bray (@johnbray69) November 1, 2014
Just how good could lee Evans become. First becoming as integral as Macca. Bit worried we could have prem league scouts circling #wwfc— Jay Sahadew (@jayster990) November 1, 2014
No wonder Lee Evans has such a spring in his step this season. #wwfc— Darb (@Darb1983) November 1, 2014
After poor first half, enough chances second half to kill them off. Sako and Edwards made difference when they came on. Evans mom #wwfc— Danny Powers (@Danny_Powers) November 1, 2014
