Manchester United lost the Manchester derby against rivals City this afternoon, but on the whole most United fans are pleased with the way in which they went down swinging.
They were besieged by problems both of their own making and of bad luck. Chris Smalling's daft red card was ludicrous and left United with ten men against the likes of Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero and Jesus Navas - not ideal. Meanwhile Marcos Rojo suffered a horrific dislocation to his shoulder meaning at one point United's defence was right-winger Antonio Valencia, central midfielder Michael Carrick and 19-year-old pairing Paddy McNair and Luke Shaw.
But United dug deep and there were some real positives to take from the game, not least the performance of Shaw.
He cost the club £30 million in the summer from Southampton but has had it tough since his Old Trafford arrival.
He has struggled with injury and been criticised in some quarters, including his own manager, for his fitness. Meanwhile the arrivals of both Rojo and Daley Blind seemed to put his position as starting left-back in doubt.
But Manchester United are using Rojo at centre-back, Blind in midfield and now Shaw is starting to flourish at left-back.
Today he had the task of keeping up with flying winger Navas. One of the fastest players in the league however managed to get away from Shaw just once late on as the teen tired, in what was a really hard fought performance from the England international.
Going forward he also showed quality. If he can work on that end product than Shaw could certainly become the next Leighton Baines given his propensity to fly forward.
He was also great in the tackle, and took on the role as leader in the back line. Nobody in that quarter has played more Premier League football at the back than Shaw and he revelled in that responsibility.
For one so young, he showed great maturity, and is certainly starting to live up to that hefty price-tag.
United fans agreed. Here is a selection of Tweets from Manchester United fans on Shaw's performance from Twitter...
Thought Luke Shaw was fantastic, ran the left wing superbly and defended solidly. Keep that going and that's England's LB sorted for 10years— Scott Shaw (@Scott87Shaw) November 2, 2014
Sounds like Shaw had another good game today. Was excellent against Chelsea. LB the one defensive position that we're set in.— Richard Cann (@RichardCann76) November 2, 2014
Shaw excellent and the Feillani revival continues. Smalling should never wear the shirt again which is one good thing to come out of today.— Andy Davies (@AndyDavies84) November 2, 2014
Luke Shaw though. He is 18 and just sensational. Had cramps at the end but kept going. Superb performance. @LukeShaw3— Vishwas_Mufc (@manunited4everr) November 2, 2014
Said it a year ago & still stand by it, Luke Shaw will be the best LB in the world in 2/3 years. Superb for his age— Joe (@JoeTmufc) November 2, 2014
