Jamie Redknapp: This was Manchester United’s worst ever back-four

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp mocks the defensive line-up that Manchester United ended up with against Manchester City in Sunday’s Premier League clash.

Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp has pointed out what could be a worry for Manchester United.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the Manchester derby, the ex-England international highlighted the defence that United ended up with.

‘Look at the back-four they ended up with’, said Redknapp. ‘Valencia, McNair, Carrick and Shaw – that’s your back-four. That’s the worst ever back-four you are going to see for Manchester United’.

The back-four of Antonio Valencia, Paddy McNair, Michael Carrick and Luke Shaw are not going to be used regularly, of course, and the players came together only because of injury and sending-off.

Chris Smalling was sent off in the first half and Marcos Rojo had to be substituted due to injury early in the second period. Winger Valencia had to start at right-back due to an injury picked up by Rafael da Silva on Thursday.

Van Gaal will not start with this back-four against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford next week, of course, but the Dutchman will have to tinker with his defence due to the absence of Rojo and Smalling.
