Chelsea kept up their fight for the Premier League title with a win against QPR at home yesterday.
It wasn’t the best performance from the Blues but a stunning goal from Oscar and an Eden Hazard penalty were enough to get the West London side over the line and maintain their lead.
That lead could be maintained further by the end of the day with Manchester City facing the difficult task of hosting Manchester United in the Manchester derby this lunchtime.
Oscar has had a relatively low profile this season so far, but he remains one of Jose Mourinho’s most important players moving forward. He’ll be frustrated that he hasn’t decided games in the same way he did yesterday.
He’s add grit and defensive resilience to his obvious attacking talent, but all of the attention this season has been focused on Cesc Fabregas, after he’s excelled after a summer move from Barcelona.
Oscar plays further forward than Fabregas, just in behind the main striker and they play different roles, but it was the Brazilian who made the difference for the side yesterday.
QPR were always going to make it difficult away from home, sitting deep and putting Chelsea’s midfield stars under pressure to try and find a way through a stubborn back four.
The job for Oscar is now going to be how he maintains the positive performance heading into the next game with a trip to Maribor in the Champions League before a trip to Anfield next weekend.
If he doesn’t feature in the European game then he’ll be a vital player as Chelsea head to Merseyside looking for a repeat of the positive performance they put in against Brendan Rodgers’ side last season.
Here’s what Chelsea fans on Twitter had to say about Oscar’s performance against QPR including his superb goal, which opened the scoring.
