Chelsea and Manchester United face a race against time if they want to sign 21-year-old midfielder Andre Gomes from Benfica.
The Portuguese star, on loan at Valencia, is thought to be the subject of a three way battle between his loan side and the Premier League giants, who are all keen to sign him according to the Daily Star.
The Star reports that Valencia have already started the process of talks to try and get him committed on a long term deal from Benfica, with a release clause that would make it difficult for any side to sign him shortly after.
“Valencia are trying to get Gomes signed to a long-term deal with a massive release clause, but he has yet to put pen to paper,” reports the national paper.
That suggests Valencia are deadly serious about trying to sign him though the potential reasons for his delay in committing to his loan club offer Chelsea and Manchester United some hope.
The delay could be because he wants to see what other offers come in and that’s where Chelsea and United can step in and boast their history and status in English football to try and gain an advantage.
Another possibility could be that he wants to see what Benfica have to offer; whether they’ll offer him a better standard and more frequent football or whether they’ll look to reward him for a positive loan spell with a better contract.
In terms of which side needs him more, Chelsea and Manchester United are both well-equipped in terms of midfield options.
Chelsea have all bases covered in terms of defensive midfielders, central midfielders and attacking midfielders, while United added well over the summer, bringing in Ander Herrera and Daley Blind to compliment the players already at the club.
Gomes is a special talent but Chelsea and United may have to gamble and take a punt with a big financial commitment to try and save themselves cash further down the line.
