Today in the Garonne derby, Toulouse are looking to get back to winning way and Wissam Ben Yedder is the key to their success.
Derby day in France, but this is one that always goes under the radar. The Derby du Garonne is not up there with Lille v Lens and PSG v Marseille, but it still means so much to the locals. Toulouse lost the midweek cup game to Bordeaux and now Alain Casanova needs Tottenham Hotspur target Wissam Ben Yedder to step up if Le Téfécé is to get back on track this season.
Including the cup game, Toulouse has now lost three straight and only won two in the last seven. It’s not the ideal run for a side looking to qualify for a place in the Europa League.
In their last victory, it was Ben Yedder who scored the only goal of the game as they beat Saint-Etienne 1-0 away from home, now they need the 24-year-old to find his scoring touch once again, helping the away side find a way past Willy Sagnol’s high-flying Bordeaux.
Playing in Casanova’s 3-5-2 formation, a lot of pressure is put on the Toulouse attack, and with Danish striker Martin Braithwaite lacking form and confidence, it will be up to Aleksandar Pesic to help get the best out of Ben Yedder.
When it clicks, Toulouse can play some of the best football in France, but consistency is a huge problem.
Ben Yedder has six goals in 11 appearances this season, and there is no doubt he is easily Toulouse’s best player. However, this is when he needs to show why the likes of Spurs and Liverpool have shown interest.
To do this, he will have to take advantage of Bordeaux’s missing defenders. Liverpool loanee Tiago Ilori is still out injured. He is joined by Ludovic Sané on the treatment table and Nicolas Pallois is out through suspension.
Midfielder Gregory Sertic will move back into the defence and Cédric Yambéré will make only his second appearance beside him.
This will be a great chance for Toulouse to get back to winning ways, and a wonderful opportunity for Ben Yedder to fire his side up the Ligue 1 table.
