122 touches and 7 clearances, but Liverpool star Lovren frustrates fans

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren recorded some impressive statistics against Newcastle United.

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren recorded some impressive statistics during the Reds’ 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United – but does that tell the whole story?

The Croatian international centre-back moved to Anfield in the summer from fellow Premier League side Southampton for a reported £20 million fee.

The 25-year-old’s arrival was met with mixed reaction from the red half of Merseyside, and his uncertain start to life at Anfield have raised doubts over the money paid for his service.

The Reds have conceded 13 goals in 10 Premier League games so far this season and the defence been under much criticism and was once again in the defeat at Newcastle.

Statistically speaking, however, the figures demonstrate how centre-back Lovren had a good game as shown by the table provided by Opta Stats.

According to the table, the 6ft 2inch central defender recorded an impressive 122 touches while maintaining an impressive 87.6% pass completion rate.

Defensively, Lovren made two tackles, completed three interceptions, recorded seven effective clearances and achieved a remarkable 10 ball recoveries.

But as the old saying goes - lies, damned lies, and statistics - as a number of Liverpool supporters took to social networking site Twitter to voice their displeasure at the Croatian’s performance in spite of his impressive numbers.
