Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has clarified the position surrounding Steven Gerrard’s new contract.
Speculation over Gerrard’s future has gathered pace following an interview last week where he stated that if he wasn’t offered a new contract by the Reds, he’d leave Anfield.
However, Rodgers has confirmed that talks are already underway over a new deal for the skipper.
“We've already spoken to his representative - We've spoken to the owners, they're happy and hopefully we can get something agreed soon,” said Rodgers on BT Sport before the Newcastle United game.
It now seems likely that the only problem related to Gerrard’s contract is the sort of deal he’ll be offered rather than whether he’ll sign it or not.
He’s an icon in the current first team and while he’s not as fait as he was in his younger days, he’s still arguably the most important player at the club by some distance.
