Former Manchester United hero Cristiano Ronaldo is the favourite to land the Ballon d’Or trophy.
Spanish fans participating in an online poll have voted Cristiano Ronaldo as the favourite for the Ballon d’Or trophy while showing great recognition for Manchester United star Angel Di Maria.
The biggest individual prize in football is just around the corner as FIFA released their final 23-man list for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.
The usual names such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta made the list but perhaps this year the winner isn’t as clear as before.
While former United hero Cristiano Ronaldo is currently in the form of his life, the prestigious award is given to the best player from November 2013 to November 2014, not August to October of this year.
At the back end of last season, Real Madrid won both the Copa Del Rey and the Champions League - But who really was the standout player for Los Blancos during their success?
According to an online poll conducted by the Spanish publication Marca, fans from the Iberian Peninsula have acknowledged Angel Di Maria’s contribution by naming him fourth in the running for the award.
From more than 68,000 votes, more than 22,000 participants believe that Di Maria deserves to at least be among the three finalists whereas Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi received just half of that figure.
Since moving to Old Trafford, he has been one of United’s better performers this season – scoring three goals and adding four assists in seven Premier League matches.
His form over the year has been incredible and if there is any justice he will be among the three finalists for the award when announced on 1 December.
Here are the current top five favourites for the award according to participants voting on Marca.
Cristiano Ronaldo – 27.2%
Sergio Ramos – 12.8%
Toni Kroos – 11.2%
Angel Di Maria – 10.9%
Lionel Messi – 5.5%
