PICTURE: Should Newcastle have had a first half penalty against Liverpool?

St James Park Four

The referee seemed to make the right call in deciding not to award Newcastle a first half penalty against Liverpool.

Newcastle United had claims for a penalty turned down in the first-half of the Premier League match against Liverpool and a still from a TV replay shows the referee made the right call.

Joe Allen hassled Newcastle star Moussa Sissoko who appeared to go down under a challenge from Allen, but a TV replay showed Allen’s foot behind the Newcastle player, as opposed to tripping him.

The referee waved away the claims with Allen seemingly frustrated at calls for a spot kick during the match.

Newcastle started the game quickly, which led to pressure on the Liverpool goal throughout the first-half, putting all Liverpool players into difficult positions all over the pitch.

Allen has to be praised for resisting the urge to wrap his foot around Sissoko’s leg, which would have almost certainly led to the referee blowing up, pointing to the penalty spot and potentially booking the Liverpool man.
