Michael Owen has backed Manchester City to win against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.
The former England international striker believes that Manuel Pellegrini’s side have more quality than Louis van Gaal’s team and expects them to win the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.
‘City have won four of the last five Manchester derbies and, despite their recent loss of form, I expect them to bounce back in a game they simply can’t afford to lose if they wish to mount a serious title challenge’, Owen wrote on Betvictor.com.
‘Wayne Rooney is back from suspension for United and he will be chomping at the bit, but there is a gulf in class between the sides at present and I fancy a home win although confidence would be tempered if David Silva and Yaya Toure don’t overcome injuries picked up at the Etihad in the Capital One Cup defeat on Wednesday’.
Perhaps there may not be ‘a gulf in class’ between United and City, but the Citizens do have a better and more balanced squad.
However, just because City have a stronger team on paper does not mean that they are guaranteed of victory at the Etihad.
The defending English champions have struggled in recent weeks and are also low in confidence, although United themselves have not fared that well.
The Manchester derby promises to be hugely entertaining, and neither side will have a great advantage.
The final outcome will depend on which team plays better on the day.
