Liverpool's indifferent start to the season continued today, as they were defeated by Newcastle United at St James Park.
It was a tight and cagey affair but in honesty Liverpool did not deserve victory as none of their players had their best day at the office.
The only Liverpool player to come out of the game with a shred of credit was their goalkeeper Simon Mignolet - and didn't he need a performance like this.
He has come under fire recently for some of his performances at Anfield, but this was a big improvement on recent fixtures. The likes of Gary Neville and Neville Southall have had it in for him, so he will have enjoyed proving a few people wrong.
Although, it looked like it was going to be another struggle for him early on. Despite a wicked Cruyff turn he was looking poor off his line and came to try collect a couple of corners he had no right to come for.
But he finally got a catch under his belt and from their he went on to impress.
He was looking confident claiming crosses and also made a couple of very good saves. None better than the one from Remy Cabella late in the game. He kept Liverpool in the contest with a stunning save with his foot when the French international was clean through on goal.
Most Liverpool fans were impressed with his overall performance, even if in the end it was not part of a winning performance.
Here is a brief reaction from Liverpool fans on Twitter...
Thus team needs completely sorted out, Other than Mignolet not a single player actually had a good game to day.— Steven Gerrard (@iSteven8Gerrard) November 1, 2014
More sloppy nonsense - Newcastle through. Credit this time Mignolet - very good save keeps #LFC in it— Anfield Talk (@Anfield_Talk) November 1, 2014

Another insipid performance by the boys, midfield didn't link at all with the attack. Only positive was Mignolet's game, quality keeping.— Mwilye Sikanyika (@moeWS_lfc33) November 1, 2014
Mignolet doing a Cruyff turn was quality tbh— 'Poetry In Motion' (@HendosBackheels) November 1, 2014
