Catalan newspaper Sport has confirmed that Luis Enrique has dropped Gerard Pique from his Barcelona squad for the match against Celta Vigo this evening.
“The Spaniard coach has decided to leave out of the squad to Gerard Piqué who started at the Bernabeu and in the Supercopa de Catalunya,” confirmed Sport.
Pique’s future is being debated on what seems like a daily basis, with old club Manchester United thought to be among the interested parties in getting their hands on him.
This could be the biggest sign yet from Enrique that he doesn’t feel Pique has a future in his Barca team despite a desire from the player to stay at the Nou Camp and retire with the Spanish giants.
It could be a move from Enrique to rest the defender ahead of the Champions League next week, but because he’s not had a great deal of first team football this season, it wouldn’t have been a terrible decision for the boss to keep him match fit as he’s not had a lot of game time this season.
