The Premier League giants could meet Serie A outfit AC Milan in a friendly after Christmas.
Milan's director Umberto Gandini revealed: "This is something we have been talking about for a few weeks and we have a committed interest to do something together."
United's Dutch manager Louis van Gaal has previously stated a desire for his side to participate in showpiece friendlies while the club are out of Europe, and with AC Milan another major European power without Champions League football this season, there is a possibility for two clubs with 10 titles in Europe's elite competition between them to meet in a headline grabbing mid season friendly fixture.
United's last European trophy was in 2007-08 when they defeated Chelsea on penalties in Moscow, and this came just a year after Milan defeated Liverpool to gain revenge for the famous 3-3 game in Istanbul, and register Milan's seventh Champions League win.
One problem could be if United progress in the FA Cup but only via a series of replays that would have to take place in midweek. If a friendly was to be arranged it would likely take place when either League Cup fixtures, which United are also out of having lost to MK Dons earlier in the season, or European fixtures are taking place.
Though no date or location was revealed, the Red Devils can point to the fact their glamour friendly with Real Madrid pulled in over 100,000 spectators in the International Champions Cup in the US this summer, a tournament Milan also featured in - a fact that may lead the two clubs to take their squads to areas of the world that seldom see such high profile players performing for their clubs.
