Liverpool legend Case: Gerrard is just putting his intentions out there

Steven Gerrard Celebrates

Liverpool legend Jimmy Case has said the club's captain Steven Gerrard is stating he wants to continue his career.

Liverpool legend Jimmy Case has been offering some insight into comments from Steven Gerrard, where the Reds skipper has hinted he could be playing elsewhere next season if he isn't offered a new contract.

Gerrard's current Liverpool deal runs out at the end of the season, but he has stated he wants to continue his career, whether that is at Anfield or not.

It was mooted in the summer that Gerrard will be offered a new contract but nothing has materialised as of yet.

Gerrard was quoted in an interview with the Daily Mail: "As it stands at the moment, I’m here until the end of the season and want to make the most of it. I certainly won’t be retiring this summer. I will play beyond this season. We will have to wait and see if that’s at Liverpool or somewhere else. That’s Liverpool’s decision. If they don’t come then I will see what’s out there."

Case shed a bit more light on things in an interview with BBC Radio 5Live, when he was in a similar situation at Southampton, and how contracts worked during the autumn years of his career at The Dell.

He said: "He is just putting it out there that he intends to carry on regardless of whether that is with Liverpool.

"I think it is the same with all clubs, when it comes to a certain point in a player's age, the sticking point is if he will be able to carry on in the same vain.

"Towards the end of my career, I was on a year-to-year contract at Southampton and I went on until I was 38.

"I think Gerrard is such a wonderful player he could play in that position for a number of years."

It wouldn't be surprising if this was the firing shot for contract negotiations to start in earnest, and with an international break not so far away, it could be the perfect time for all parties to get around the table and reach a deal - with Gerrard likely to extend his stay for another year, and the likelihood of a club ambassador's role at Anfield should he wish to retire at the end of that deal.

Case seems to suggest that it isn't a threat to leave Anfield, but more a plea for negotiations on Gerrard's new contract to start as quickly as possible.
