Defender with Arsenal links is villain for Lazio

Belgian right-back Luis Pedro Cavanda is said to be on Arsenal's radar, but he didn't do his reputation any good with his performance for Lazio last night.

Luis Pedro Cavanda's turbulent time at Lazio continued yesterday night as he was sent off for Lazio in their 1-1 draw with Verona.

The 23-year-old's talent isn't in question, but there have been doubts about his attitude and he found himself below Dusan Basta and Abdoulay Konko in the pecking order at the start of the season.

Just as it was starting to look inevitable that Cavanda would seek a move in January, he returned to first-team contention and seemed to turn over a new leaf at Lazio.

But last night was one to forget for Cavanda, who had a disastrous 67th minute at the Stadio Bentegodi.

Lazio were leading Verona 1-0 when Cavanda, who was already on a yellow card, grabbed Juanito Gomez Taleb's arm in the box to hold him back.

The referee awarded a penalty, which Luca Toni converted, and presented Cavanda with his second yellow card.

The game ended 1-1, but Cavanda was clearly the villain and will now have to serve a suspension, which may cause him to lose his tenuous grip on the right-back position.

It remains to be seen whether anyone presents a bid in January, but if a suitor steps in it looks very possible that Cavanda will be tempted.
