Mauricio Pochettino gets the backing of Chris Hughton as doubts start to emerge on whether the Argentine can take Tottenham Hotspur back in the Champions League.

Former Tottenham Hotspur assistant manager Chris Hughton has brushed off suggestions that Mauricio Pochettino is under pressure.

Appointed the Spurs boss in the summer, Pochettino was expected to make the team competitive and fight for a top-six finish in the Premier League this season.

And the North London club did make a strong start to the campaign, but they have struggled and have been inconsistent for the last few weeks.

Although the Argentine is unlikely to lose his job anytime soon, pressure is increasing on the former Southampton manager to get results.

However, Hughton believes that the Tottenham boss is being unfairly criticised and told talkSPORT: ‘He is still settling in. He is just toying with what his best XI is and we are only nine games into the season.

‘At this particular moment, they are only three points behind Arsenal and there is a long way to go. He is still having that bedding in period, but there are some good signs’.

Hughton does have a point. Heading into this weekend’s round of matches, Tottenham find themselves 11th in the Premier League table with 11 points from nine matches. Spurs are just three points behind fifth-placed Arsenal and only two points behind Manchester United.

However, Tottenham cannot look at other top teams underperforming and need to step up their own game.
