Catalan based newspaper Sport has delivered a blow for Chelsea and Manchester United fans over their reported interest in Barcelona defender Gerard Pique.
Pique has strongly been linked with a move back to his old club United, with the Chelsea links fresher having appeared earlier this week.
However, Sport has cut through the rumours and has suggested that the centre back will retire at the Nou Camp.
“His desire is to retire at the Nou Camp,” reports the Spanish newspaper.
Pique has been inconsistently used so far this season by new Barca head coach Luis Enrique, which has created speculation over his future.
A Sport TV panel suggested that based on his current form, he didn’t deserve to be in the Barcelona team but that doesn’t seem to have dulled his desire to succeed at the club.
United have been reportedly hunting a centre back for several months as Louis van Gaal looks for ways to sure up his defensive backline.
Pique is one of several players to have been linked with an Old Trafford move with Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund and Ron Vlaar of Aston Villa other names mentioned.
Chelsea’s apparent interest is more difficult to understand because of the settled defence Jose Mourinho already has at Stamford Bridge.
Gary Cahill and John Terry are one of the best centre back pairings in England with Branislav Ivanovic able to play in the middle and Kurt Zouma waiting for a chance to impress.
