Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa's recent performance-levels are so woeful that, if given the choice, only Burnley would feature more prominently on a club's list of preferred opponents.
That is, according to two-time league title winner Paul Merson, who underlines the fact that the Villains are lacking in offensive artillery of late, while Spurs posted a "shocking" display at White Hart Lane against Newcastle United as Sammy Ameobi and Ayoze Perez canceled out Emmanuel Adebayor's first half strike.
"If you take away Burnley then I think both of these teams would pick the other as their preferred team to play this weekend," wrote Merson in his weekly prediction column for Sky Sports.
"Tottenham would pick Aston Villa because they haven’t been scoring goals and I think Villa would pick Tottenham because of that shocking result at home to Newcastle," he said.
Villa could be buoyed by the presence of Christian Benteke, though, who has competed in 200 Premier League minutes thus far this season.
And Villa manager Paul Lambert will be hoping the powerful Belgian reaches his peak levels that attracted the transfer market interest of, ironically, Tottenham Hotspur.
"Christian Benteke is another game in to his return and I’m going to go for Villa to win 1-0 – but that’s more my heart talking than my head, if I’m being honest," Merson concluded.
