Carragher predicts the United player destined to be league's best in his position

Luke Shaw joined Manchester United for big money this summer, and former Liverpool star Carragher thinks there isn't much between him and Manchester City's fullbacks.

Ahead of Manchester United's visit to Manchester City this weekend, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has been comparing the two sides and deliberating which of United's stars would be most coveted by the Premier League champions.

The former England man picked Angel di Maria as the one outstanding talent City would love to have at their disposal, but then chose United teenager Luke Shaw as the second player that could improve Manuel Pellegrini's squad.

"Defence is their [City's] weakness, particularly with the second centre-back," said Carragher. "But United aren’t blessed in that department either so I can’t really make a case for the likes of Chris Smalling or Marcos Rojo at the moment.

"If it wasn’t Di Maria, however, I’d go for Luke Shaw.

"I don’t think Gael Clichy or Aleksandar Kolarov are the best left-backs in the world, whereas I think Shaw, given a few more years’ experience, will become the best in that position in the Premier League."

Shaw has made just four appearances for his new side since a near £30 million move from Southampton this summer. Despite heading to the World Cup with England, the left back had some fitness issues, as well as a hamstring injury, that delayed his settling in at Old Trafford. However, his debut and ongoing appearances under Louis van Gaal have yet to be tainted by defeat, and United fans will be hoping that will continue at the Etihad on Sunday.
