Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka has explained the curious situation surrounding Milos Veljkovic.
The 19-year-old joined the Championship club on a short-term loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month.
The Serbia Under-21 international defender is supposed to be getting valuable playing time at Middlesbrough, but so far he has yet to make an appearance.
Veljkovic will certainly be feeling a bit down for failing to convince Karanka that he can be part of the defence, but the Spaniard has assured the youngster that his time will come.
‘I hope I can give him a chance soon’, The Northern Echo quotes him as saying. ‘He is a young lad and he is training very well, but it is difficult when you arrive in a team where all the players are playing well.
‘It is hard to give him an opportunity when that is the case, but I told him if he keeps going in the same way the chances will appear for him. He is capable of playing in this team’.
Karanka has a point. Middlesbrough have lost just one of their last six games in the Championship and are currently fifth in the league.
From Karanka’s perspective, there is no need for him to change his defence at the moment. Just because he has signed Veljkovic does not mean that he will have to play him.
However, Karanka has brought in Veljkovic to use him. If the teenager continues to train well and any injuries crop up among the Middlesbrough players, then he will be given his chance.
