Manchester United striker James Wilson gave a very humble response when he was asked about being classed in the same group as Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao.
Wilson has seen his status at Manchester United promoted after Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez left the club over the summer, which means he’s now the fourth choice forward at Old Trafford.
In an exclusive Q&A session for the Manchester United website, he was asked what it was like to be considered in the same group as those world class players.
“It’s great to be in contention with such names in the world of football as theirs. Obviously with the competition in training and even in the games as well, if I can just get a few minutes here and there, then hopefully I can get my chance further down the line,” was his reply.
Wilson is the perfect example of a young player looking to excel under the guidance of Louis van Gaal.
When LvG was unveiled as Manchester United’s next manager, he always maintained that he would give younger players a chance if he felt they were good enough compared to his more established first team options.
The job for Wilson now is to ensure that he puts himself in a good position to take advantage of the chances he’s given further down the line this season, whether they come in the FA Cup or the Premier League.
He’s understandably buzzing and eager to get more experience, similar to the chances he received last season and against Everton at Old Trafford earlier this season.
“It was great being on the pitch being with the players and getting involved. It was brilliant, getting on, it was great,” he replied when asked about his cameo against Everton.
His job is to make all three of the world class players ahead of him start looking over their shoulders.
