Arsene Wenger is reportedly confident of doing a deal for Goncalo Guedes of Benfica.
Arsene Wenger is reportedly confident of beating all interested parties to the signature of 17-year-old Benfica star Goncalo Guedes.
The teenage forward has been linked with a variety of top European clubs, but latest updates suggest the Gunners are moving ahead in the race to sign him this winter.
Arsenal’s main competition reportedly comes from Bundesliga and European giants Bayern Munich, with Pep Guardiola consistently keen to secure the best young talent in Europe for his club.
Bayern have the resources and the relatively guaranteed chance of success to oust Arsenal in the race to snap up Guedes but Arsenal’s biggest advantage is their manager.
Wenger has a proven track record when it comes to taking younger players and turning them into established first team stars and it’s arguable that he’d get more opportunities to excel at the Gunners.
He could play off of either side of the main striker up front although should he move to Arsenal, he’s likely to start life in the youth team.
Arsenal’s under-21 side has been decent in division two of the competition so far this season and that would provide a platform he could use to try and get first team opportunities.
Arsenal also use their under-21 side well to give older and more experienced players beneficial run outs which can be productive in terms of helping the younger players at the club.
While Guedes is unlikely to be Arsenal’s transfer priority this winter, it’s an example of another potentially positive signing, creating the opportunity for Wenger to develop another special player.
