Danish newspaper BT claims Tottenham Hotspur are looking to make Christian Eriksen the best paid Dane before the New Year.
Eriksen is on a wage of roughly £36,500 per week according to BT, which is surprising as he’s one of Tottenham Hotspur’s most creative and exciting players.
Eriksen’s current contract doesn’t expire until 2018 but the contemporary football world is full of examples of players improving their contracts and renewing deals long before their expiration dates.
“There may be a new contract, even before the New Year. It will certainly make Christian Eriksen the best paid Danish player right now,” reports BT.
The obvious worry that BT’s revelation creates is that another side interested in Eriksen could come in over the top of Tottenham and make him an offer, which is much larger than the deal he currently enjoys.
However, the reported plans of Tottenham to improve Eriksen’s deal before the New Year suggest they will try and bypass that potential problem before the January transfer window officially opens.
He’s arguably the best number ten at White Hart Lane although Erik Lamela has impressed through the middle when he’s been moved off of the flanks by Mauricio Pochettino this season.
Therefore, Tottenham’s urgency to remove any remote possibility that he could leave deserves credit on the part of Pochettino and chairman Daniel Levy, if BT’s report is accurate.
