Newcastle in for Gignac? Three questions and reaction

Newcastle United have been linked with Andre Pierre Gignac.

Marseille's Andre-Pierre Gignac is the latest striker to be linked with Newcastle United.

The French front-man, whose contract expires this summer, could be available at a cut-down price in January and the Chronicle believe that Newcastle have been scouting him.

Here are three questions and reaction on the move.

Would he be open to a move?

Gignac has been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool in recent times and, currently, a move to either of those sides would be more appealing.

That said, the 28-year-old would likely have to play a back-up role if he did move to either of the Champions League chasers, whereas he would be the club's main attacking outlet if he was to join St. James' Park.

Gignac would also join a number of other players from the French league if he was to move to Tyneside meaning his settling in period should be made easier by transferring to the North-East.

Can he score the goals needed?

Gignac possesses a quality scoring record in Ligue 1 and his form his season has been sensational.

Whilst Newcastle have struggled for goals, Gignac has 10 goals in his first 11 games in the league this campaign and having someone full of confidence would no doubt aid Alan Pardew.

The concern is, however, that the target-man has never played in English football before and he would have a limited time to adapt - as he would likely be brought in as the leading man.

What about Ayoze Perez and Papiss Cisse?

Despite Newcastle's struggles for goals so far during the campaign, both Perez and Cisse have shown that they may have a part to play.

Perez scored the winner against Tottenham Hotspur in the club's last fixture and there is great anticipation about his development at the club.

The youngster has revealed this week that he rejected Real Madrid and Barcelona over the summer to join Newcastle and it would be a shame to drop him from the team when he is just starting to show his class.

Cisse, too, has looked in better form than in a long time since returning from injury and already has four goals to his name.
