Joey Barton 'delighted' for Newcastle United star - who? And why?

St James Park

Queens Park Rangers midfielder has expressed elation for a former team-mate of his at Newcastle United.

Medial ligament damage has plagued Ryan Taylor's career for the best part of two seasons, but the versatile 30-year-old Magpie returned in Newcastle United colours earlier this evening, much to the delight of one of his former team-mates at St James Park.

Taylor started the match against Manchester City in the fourth round of the League Cup at the Etihad Stadium and Joey Barton swiftly took to Twitter to make a statement.

The Queens Park Rangers midfielder said: "[I'm] really happy to see Ryan Taylor back in Newcastle's starting XI tonight.

"[He has] overcome a horrific series of set backs," Barton added.

"And I'm delighted for him."

Taylor, who only made his second appearance for Newcastle since the 2011-12 season, made a positive impact within just five minutes at Manchester City as he assisted goal-scorer Rolando Aarons following a counter-attack opportunity.
