This summer there was a queue of teams lining up waiting to take advantage of the desire of Sevilla captain Ivan Rakitic to leave the Sanchez Pizjuan for pastures new.
That included Premier League teams.
But both United and Liverpool were left deflated when Rakitic decided to join Barcelona. He made the €18 million switch to the Nou Camp in the summer as a replacement for Chelsea bound Cesc Fabregas and has gone on to have an impressive start to his Catalan adventure - much to the annoyance of United and Liverpool fans who would have loved to see him at their respective club this season.
Now Rakitic has opened up about his decision to join Barcelona.
He says the move fulfilled a childhood ambition, suggesting that any other team interested stood very little chance to sign him ahead of Barca.
"Wearing this shirt is a dream come true, it’s a marvellous feeling. Every kid dreams about coming here. My only thought was of sharing a dressing room with players like these.
"I know that I have things to learn and I am always looking to take a step forward. You can show your potential if you feel happy and at home, I have felt that way since my first day at Barcelona.”
There is no doubt that both teams would have loved Rakitic in their fold, any team in the world would like to welcome him into the first-team.
But it seems he has his dream move - and not Manchester United or Liverpool stood a chance of getting in the way of this switch.
