Chelsea striker Didier Drogba 'not surprised' by Shrewsbury

Didier Drogba faced Shrewsbury Town whilst a Galatasaray player.

Chelsea took on Shrewsbury Town last night in the Capital One Cup - certainly a game which should have been a walk in the meadow for the Premier League table-toppers and title favourites.

But it was certainly not that.

Chelsea were pushed all the way by the Shropshire side, with a late own goal the difference between the sides as Chelsea won 2-1.

The difference between embarrassment and success was Didier Drogba. The experienced striker scored one and was the reason behind the own goal - but he was not surprised that Shrewsbury gave them a fight.

He played against them last summer. Shrewsbury hosted Galatasaray in a prestige pre-season friendly last July - a game in which Drogba featured.

Gala won that game 3-0 thanks to goals from Emre Colak, Nordin Amrabat and Wesley Sneijder - while Drogba made an appearance in the second-half.

After victory yesterday Drogba even mentioned the friendly:

"I played against them in a friendly match with Galatasaray last year so I knew this team already. I’m not surprised by how good they were. They’ve improved from that game. The crowd was pushing them too."

Drogba has been facing Shrewsbury on an annual basis recently, and fans of the club won't mind. He stuck around for half an hour signing autographs for the home fans.
