Chelsea player ratings v Shrewsbury: Zouma and Oscar shine on difficult night

Kurt Zouma

Chelsea ground out a 2-1 win against Shrewsbury Town in the League Cup last night.

Chelsea didn’t produce their best performance against Shrewsbury Town in the League Cup last night but they got the job done on what could have been a more embarrassing evening.

Didier Drogba gave the Blues the lead before an equaliser for the home side was cancelled out because of an own goal.

Jose Mourinho was less than pleased with the performance and implied that he hasn’t been given a selection problem by any player looking ahead to the weekend.

“If players that played 90 minutes two days ago were fantastic, I expect people who are not playing a lot to raise the level to create me problems,” said the boss.

“I love problems of choices, and it is easy to choose my team for Saturday.”

Here are our player ratings for the game.

Cech – 7

Solid and reliable as ever. Made key saves at key times and continues putting pressure on Thibaut Courtois.

Christensen – 7

Looked decent in the right-back role and did an effective job at both ends of the pitch.

Zouma – 8

Zouma looks mature beyond his years and was easily the most reliable defender for the Blues throughout the game.

Cahill – 7

Looked a little fatigued but his quality against lower league opposition was obvious,

Luis – 7

Ran the left hand side well and was rarely troubled defensively, getting forward to support the attack when he could.

Mikel – 6

He won’t be happy with the mistake which led to the equaliser but was otherwise solid during the game.

Ake – 7

Picked the ball up and ran at defenders, putting them onto the back foot and create small pockets of space for Chelsea players to exploit.

Salah – 6

His pace is frightening once he gets going but he failed to find the spaces to exploit it.

Oscar – 8

A class above and toyed with the Shrews defence at times. Never had a problem finding space to get on the ball or picking a pass.

Schurrle – 7

Looked fresh and hungry and nearly scored an awesome goal with a long range effort in the second 45.

Drogba – 8

Led by example as captain with a neat finish to make it two goals from two games so far.

Willian – 6

Showed good composure for the cross which led to Chelsea’s equaliser.

Matic – 6

Was brought on to help shut up shop and did so effectively.

Hazard – N/A
